Pilgrimage Tourism

Stavropol Krai has a number of sacred sites attracting pilgrims from all over the world. This region is somewhat of a border between Christianity and Islam, while these, as well as some less represented religions have been living together peacefully for hundreds of years now. About 20 Cathedrals and Churches of Stavropol Diocese have been officially announced culture and architecture monuments. The so-called Cathedral Necklace of Stavropol region includes hundreds of churches that have been restored by now.

Uspenskaya (Assumption) Church (City of Stavropol) has the miracle-working Iberian Icon of the Mother of God, which was created by monks of Athos Monastery (Greece). Here, in the Caucasian Mineral water you can visit the sacred sites that are linked to the life and deeds of the famous elder Theodosius the Caucasian. This trip will include visiting the Village of Krasny Uzel, Archangel Michael Church, and the Chapel in the local cemetery where the Priest of Jerusalem was buried. In the City of Mineralnye Vody you can visit
intercession of the Holy Virgin Church where they have reliquiae of elder Theodosius the Caucasian, and see the newly found Icon of the Virgin Mary of Tikhvin.

It was a big event for believers of the region when Vtoro-Afonsky Assumption (male) Monastery was reconstructed on the south-western side of Mt. Beshtau. This Monastery was founded initially 100 years ago, after which it was destroyed (in the 30s of the last Century), and once again opened its doors to believers in 2001.

Each year there are more and more people coming to visit Saint George Monsatery (female), which is located near the highway Mineralnye Vody – Kislovodsk.

In the City of Budennovsk pilgrim attraction sites are the places bearing the memory of Orthodox Saint Michael of Tver who lived in the times of the Golden Horde and died in their camp – Madjary.

There are many cathedrals and churches in Budennovsky, Trunovsky, Georgievsky, and Krasnogvardeisky Municipal Rayons, as well as in the cities of Pyatigorsk, Zheleznovodsk, and Stavropol.

On December 14, 2012 His Holiness Kirill Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia delivered in the City of Pyatigorsk Great Dedication and Communion Service in Cathedral of Jesus the Savoir Healing the Bedridden at the Pool of Bethesda. One of the special holy things in this Cathedral is Piece of The True Cross.
